CULTURE

CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA

SEPT. 2-7th, 2020

Itinerary

Cartagena. This gem has been a NOMADNESS favorite destination for years now, and partnering with tribe member, Alex Rocha’s tour team at Experience Cartagena means if our trip is going to be one word, it’s: authentic. This trip is for the traveler who is looking for the guts of Cartagena. The food, the music, the history of the diaspora, the people — the culture. We’re honored to finally bring this popular Tribe destination to our official roster.

*Itinerary is below. May be subject to change, of which you will be notified.

Trip Intensity: 3/5

Day One:

  • Arrivals

  • It’s night one! Our dinner experience includes introductions to one another and the taste buds of Cartagena. We’ll be getting our first introduction to what culture truly is in this amazing city.

Day Two:

  • Experience Cartagena will pick us up after breakfast as the group will head to Playa Blanca Beach in Baru Island. This road trip allows the group to see Cartagena, even visiting some local villages, all culminating with a few hours on the beach. It’s one of Colombia's most spectacular beaches to enjoy the sun, the pristine waters, the African Colombian music — the culture. Includes lunch.

Day Three:

  • It’s what Experience Cartagena calls, the REAL Cartagena tour. We’ll be immersed in the local culture — learning about music, food, people, customs and beliefs. We will head to the local market where we try local food and fruits, learn about natives of Cartagena and the African influence. The Tour will take us to traditional neighborhoods of  Cartagena, out of the walled town, to understand the city  from a geographic, cultural, social and economic point of view. Includes lunch.

  • Mud Volcano…of course

Day Four:

  • Tour of Palenque. This is a tour to learn about African people that escaped from slavery in the 1600’s. This community has preserved African culture, including their language (Bantú), traditional music and dances, way of living, customs and spiritual beliefs. Declared by UNESCO a world cultural heritage site in 2005. Includes lunch.

  • Free Day

  • Farewell Group Dinner

CREATE

MAY 20-25th, 2020

Itinerary

Creativity is truly within us all. Yet, there is something special to being surrounded by the ocean on an island so close to home (for many of us), that gives us just enough mental freedom to explore that side of our brains. NOMADNESS is partnering with one of Bermuda’s well known socialistas and guides, Kristin White, for a trip that dives into the creatives of the island, as well as it’s relevant role in the African Diaspora.

*Itinerary is below. May be subject to change, of which you will be notified.

Trip Intensity: 2/5

Day One:

  • Arrivals

  • Our welcome dinner in Bermuda will begin with a bonfire to set the tone. Dinner will include a fish fry and other options for our vegetarians and meat lovers. Under the sun, we will get to know one another, and our creative intentions will be set for the trip.

Day Two:

  • With our host leading the way, we will embark on an afternoon African Diaspora Heritage Tour

  • Lunch at East End Mini Yacht Club

  • Sunset Photo Workshop + Dinner at Tobacco Bay

Day Three:

  • Our itinerary lands us on the island during the Bermuda Day Parade. Our group will be attending the parade in conjunction with a painting mural experience with the Chewstick Foundation.

The Chewstick Foundation is a non-profit cultural arts movement that celebrates storytellers of every medium.  [I was on their board for several years.]  After an intense period of fundraising, Chewstick was able to renovate a new space, right in the heart of the city, only to lose everything in a fire in 2016.  Now, instead of having a physical space, they run retreat camping programs, open mics, workshops, and are instrumental in introducing public art that celebrates Bermuda heritage. By partnering with them for the mural project, Nomadness is helping support this important local organization.

Day Four:

  • FREE DAY

  • Optional Add ON: Art and Shopping Tour of the City - Details can be provided if interested

Day Five:

  • After breakfast, our local host Kristin will be taking us on a boat cruise that includes local Bermudian art workshops on board, and lunch

  • Farewell Dinner

Day Six:

Awe In India.png

AWE

jaipur, india

march 7-14, 2020

Itinerary

Get ready to be awestruck by both the beauty and the realness of India. Partnering with Bhati Tours, we will be remixing our version of the Golden Triangle. Taj Mahal. Pushkar Desert. Of course, the coveted festival around the world, Holi. Although Holi Festival of Colors is vibrant and fun, this trip is not for the faint of heart. These sections of India are unapologetic in its poverty and we will be traveling within cities that are 5 hours away from one another, sometimes locally. Be prepared to see it all. If you let it, it will transform you. It is guaranteed to humble you, and leave you in awe. This trip is a Tribe favorite and sells out quickly, as it’ll be our sixth run at this itinerary.

Sample itinerary is below.

Trip Intensity: 4 of 5

Day One:

  • Arrivals

  • Group Welcome Dinner

Day Two: Explore Jaipur

  • Explore Amber Fort & the Pink City

  • Textile Shopping in Jaipur: This is your time to get any sarees/garments made that you’d like to wear to the Taj Mahal or to take home tailored before the end of the trip.

Day Three: Explore the Desert Town of Pushkar

  • Around a two hour drive outside of Jaipur, the group will drive to Pushkar Desert. Here we will enjoy the cheapest shopping of the trip, as well as a camel safari.

  • This day marks the soft start to Holi. As we drive back the group will notice large bonfires popping up in the streets to signify the start of the holiday. Locals are burning things from this previous year to usher in the goodness of a new year. We encourage our Tribe members to participate.

Day Four: Happy Holi

  • After breakfast, we head into a local Jaipur neighborhood and celebrate Holi Festival of Colors with local family and friends. There’s truly nothing like this experience! Nothing. Get messy, and be ready to celebrate upon awakening, as Holi is a day time festival. Upon our afternoon return to the hotel, take time to regroup, rest, and reflect.

Day Five: Rest

  • Rest/Free Day

  • Midnight departure for the Taj Mahal

Day Six: Taj Mahal

  • Leaving at midnight, the group will take the five hour drive to Agra, India and experience the Taj Mahal in the morning. The group will spend a couple hours exploring the grounds, and taking our coveted group photo in local garb, while showing respect to where we are. The Taj Mahal is not to be rushed, but to be breathed in. We will stop for lunch on the way back to Jaipur.

Day Seven: You’re Locals Now

  • Local Spa day for those interested in getting local treatments done

  • Visit to Monkey Temple

  • Rest and Hydrate
